About this Position
Dunbar Eye Associates is seeking an optician to join our team. We are an independent optometry practice in Dunbar, West Virginia, serving the greater Kanawha Valley. We have recently moved into a larger location and are growing our staff to serve more patients.
The optician assists patients in selecting the proper frames and lenses as prescribed by the doctor. This person is familiar with all frames carried by the practice and the various lens materials and options available.
Previous optical experience is not required. We can provide on-the-job training for technical skills. A background in customer service or retail sales is well suited for this position.
Duties
Assists and educates patients on frame and lens selection in relation to lifestyle needs;
Provides vision care benefits counseling;
Measures patient pupillary distance and segment height in frames for custom fit;
Trains patients on care of eyewear;
Places dispensary orders and claims in Practice Director and vision benefit order systems and tracks progress;
Receives finished spectacles from optical labs, verifies prescriptions, prepares for dispensing, and notifies patient that eyewear is ready for pickup;
Dispenses eyewear and provides final custom fit adjustments;
Makes minor eyewear repairs, orders replacement parts, and facilitates eyewear replacement under warranty;
Assists with frame board management, reorders stock, and enters frames in inventory;
Tracks key statistics, including total eyewear sales, multiple pairs, dispensing ratios;
Maintains appearance of dispensary, equipment and supply levels; and
Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications
Possessing a firm grasp on current fashion trends, and having a good balance of assertive sales techniques with the ability to teach patients the value of the lens options recommended by the doctor for their lifestyle;
Strong computer skills and the ability to learn EMR system;
Ability to multi-task with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail;
Excellent customer service;
Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
Superior verbal and written skills; and
Strong interpersonal skills essential

Knowledge of lens materials and finishing methods: The employee is able to counsel patient on the optical benefits and drawbacks of lens materials, coatings, and finishing methods.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent; preference will be given to candidates with college degrees in a relevant field. Occasional travel for educational conferences required.
